Lee Vernon McNeill -12/1/1964 – 9/29/2021

Born December 2, 1964, in Lumberton, NC – Robeson County, to Charlie and Nellie McNeill, Lee Vernon McNeill was destined to make a “household” name for himself. Starting out as a young kid playing sports with his 3 brothers, to growing up playing baseball, football, and running track in high school, to later becoming one of the fastest men alive in track and field within his time. Training on asphalt and dirt roads, his hard work and determination paid off from becoming one of the best and fastest athletes out of St. Pauls, NC winning the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championship in both the 100- and 200-meter dash in 1984.

Lee would later be recruited by East Carolina University track and field coach, Bill Carson, to become a 5-time All-American sprinter and record holder at East Carolina University. Lee Vernon McNeill was one (of two) of the only Pirates to have been named All-American in three different events in one year (indoor and outdoor combined). No one has ever earned more than two All-American titles in one season (indoor or outdoor). Although Lee ran the 100- and 200-meter dash, he specialized in the 100-meter dash, where in 1985 he made a name for himself when he defeated Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis at the USA outdoor track and field championship. Lee placed second in the final, outrunning both the world record holder and the NCAA champion. He earned three bronze medals at the National Sports Festival and the World University Games. Lee’s first gold medals of the summer came in June 1987, at the U.S. Olympic Festival in Durham, NC. In 1987, Lee won a gold medal in a 4×100 meter relay at the World Championship, together with Lee McRae, Harvey Glance and Carl Lewis.

Lee had a personal best and record-holding time over the 100-meter dash at 10.09 seconds, achieved on June 17, 1988 in Tampa, FL, when finishing 3rd in the Athletics Congress final. Lee will later become one of the members of the 1988 Olympic team to compete in Seoul, South Korea.

On April 18, 2010, Lee was one of six new inductees in the Robeson County Sports Hall of Fame ceremony in Pembroke, NC. Lee would later become highly involved in his community by being one of the best and decorated coaches to aid in the startup of Soaring Eagles Track Club in Garner NC. Lee took pride in being an effective leader in training, teaching, mentoring and coaching young children and teenagers, ages 5 years and up, the fundamentals of track and field. Lee Vernon McNeill, is definitely a legendary track and field heroic athlete that will absolutely be missed.
